The Blue Ribbon Task Force created by
the Board of Directors of the Nevada Department of Transportation and
former Gov. Kenny Guinn has identified, in a report dated December 5,
2006, a $3.8 billion shortfall in funding that is required for the highway
projects necessary to meet Nevada's transportation needs.
The State Legislature approved the most recent funding package for
roads and highways in 1991. From 1992 to 2005, the Federal Highway
Administration reports that highway construction costs have increased
78.5 percent while the purchasing power of Nevada’s transportation
funding has decreased by 44 percent.
The Nevada Legislature has proposed Senate
Bill 324 – The Highway Funding and Accountability Act to address
the $3.8 billion shortfall in roadway construction and maintenance funding,
including 10 essential Super & mega projects.
These highway projects are necessary to ensure ease of transportation
as well as the economic well being of the residents and businesses of
this state; provide a safer transportation system, mitigate roadway
congestion and reduce environmental impacts; and accommodate future
growth.
Senate Bill 324 provides an increase in revenue of approximately $80
per licensed driver every year and dedicates those funds to building
and maintaining Nevada's highways and roads.
